The Wallet Gift Guide: 9 USA-Made Wallets, Plus 2 Notebook Covers
Fire hose, combat boot leather, and Cordura. How many cards each one holds, and the one thing each won't do.
The short version
- Pick the wallet by how they carry. How many cards? Front pocket or back?
- The Sergeant is thin and holds 4 to 8 cards. It's the one we sell most.
- The Rookie holds 8 to 12 cards and still fits a front pocket.
- For flat bills, get the Lieutenant. For an ID window, get the Captain.
- For a firefighter, EMT, or officer: fire hose or bunker gear. For a veteran: combat boot leather or camo Cordura. For the trades: the bifolds and the notebook wallet.
- Every one is made in the USA.
Start with how they carry
Ask two things. How many cards do they carry? Do they keep their wallet in a front pocket or a back one?
Then pick the material. That's the part that makes it a gift.
All of these are made in the USA. Most are sewn with T-70 nylon thread and edged with 1" mil-spec binding. What changes is the outside.

For a firefighter, EMT, or police officer
For many firefighters, a wallet made from retired hose or bunker gear ties the gift to the job.
Sergeant Wallet – Bunker Gear Edition
This one is cut from retired firefighter turnout gear. It holds 4 to 8 cards. A 3" elastic strap holds cash folded in thirds. It rides in a front pocket.
Some come with a reflective safety stripe. The wallet shows where it's been.
What it won't do: hold a big stack of cards. 8 is the limit.
Lieutenant Wallet – Firehose Edition
This is a classic bifold for people who carry cash. It holds up to 20 bills flat. It fits 4 to 12 cards in four slots.
The outside is decommissioned fire hose. The inside is lined with 1000D Cordura. The hose may show writing or scuffs from its service life. No two are identical.
What it won't do: limit you to back-pocket carry. It fits in a front or back pocket.
Sergeant Wallet – Firehose Edition
This is the one we sell most. It has over 5,000 five-star reviews. It's made of decommissioned fire hose, holds 4 to 8 cards, and has a 3" cash strap. It goes in a front pocket.
Not sure what they carry? Get this one. Some colors are limited editions, cut from hose with specific colors and markings, like old department letters.
What it won't do: hold more than 8 cards. Same trade as the bunker gear one.
For a veteran, or someone still serving
Here are two materials. Each says something different.
The leather was made for military boots, but never used. The Cordura is what a lot of issued gear is made from. It's a material they'll know.
Sergeant Wallet – Combat Boot Leather Edition
This is full-grain leather made for U.S. military combat boots. It was held out of boot production for small marks, like scars or minor color variations, and saved from landfills. Now it gets a second life as a wallet.
It holds 4 to 8 cards, has a 3" cash strap, and goes in a front pocket. The edging comes in Multicam and Multicam Arid. It wears in, not out.
What it won't do: hold the same count every time. Grain thickness varies, so capacity does too.
Captain Wallet – Combat Leather Edition
This is the big bifold in the same boot leather. It holds 12 to 15 cards and up to 20 bills folded in half. The ID window is over twice as thick as a standard one. The inside is lined with 1000D Cordura.
It folds to 4" by 5". That's wider than most wallets. It sits flatter in a back pocket when you're driving or sitting all day.
What it won't do: limit your carry. This is the biggest in our lineup.
Sergeant Wallet – Nylon Edition
This one is two layers of 1000D Cordura nylon. No hose. No leather. It's sewn with T-90 bonded nylon thread.
It holds 8 to 10 cards, a few more than the fire hose Sergeant. It has a 3" cash strap and goes in a front pocket. It comes in Multicam, Multicam Black, Digital Desert, Typhon, and more. The camo pattern lands a little different on each one.
What it won't do: tell the fire hose story. It's the Sergeant for someone who wants the pattern.
For the trades, and everyday carry
People who work with their hands tend to be hard on wallets. These three ride in a pocket ten or twelve hours a day and keep going.
Rookie Wallet – Firehose Edition
This is a front-pocket bifold. It's for people who carry more than the Sergeant holds. It fits 8 to 12 cards in Hypalon sleeves. A 5" strap on the outside holds cash folded in thirds
It's thin enough for a front pocket. Most bifolds aren't.
What it won't do: keep bills flat. For that, get the Lieutenant.
Captain Wallet – Firehose Edition
This is the same wide bifold as the leather Captain, but in fire hose. It holds 12 to 15 cards and 20 bills folded in half. It has a thick ID window and a 1000D Cordura lining.
It's for someone who sits on their wallet all day. Think a truck seat, a cab, or a desk chair.
What it won't do: leave any extra room in a front pocket. You can probably make it fit, but it’s best for back-pocket carry.
Field Notes Wallet
This one is for someone who writes things down. It holds a 5.5" by 3.5" notebook, 4 to 6 cards, and folded bills under the back flap. There's a 2" by 3" spot for a patch.
Right now it's in stock in Hypalon. Comes with a compact notebook that fits.
What it won't do: come with the patch. Those are sold separately.
Special mention: notebook covers
Some people don't need a new wallet. They need somewhere to write. These two are made from decommissioned fire hose, just like the wallets. They hold a notebook and a pen and ride in a pocket all day.
Rite in the Rain Notebook Cover
This cover fits a 3" by 5" Rite in the Rain top-spiral notebook. It's the all-weather notebook patrol officers and tradespeople keep in a shirt pocket. It flips open from the top. A leather pen slot holds a standard duty pen. An elastic band keeps it shut.
The outside is decommissioned fire hose, edged in mil-spec webbing. It's water-resistant. It also comes in combat boot leather. Comes with a compact notebook that fits.
What it won't do: come with the pen.
The Inspector Notebook Cover
The Inspector opens from the side, like a book. It fits Field Notes, Moleskine Cahier, and many side-folding 3.5" by 5.5" notebooks. Top-spiral notebooks won't fit. The wire gets in the way. It has a leather pen sleeve and an elastic strap. It's 6" by 4" closed.
It's made from 5" supply line. That's the hose that runs from the hydrant to the engine. It also comes in combat boot leather.
What it won't do: come with a pen. Pens are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is the fire hose from real fires?
Some of it. Every piece is real decommissioned fire hose. Some ran calls for years. Some were retired after testing and never saw a fire. Either way, it's kept out of the landfill and given a second life as gear. Any marks you see were on the hose when it came to us. We don't add them.
-
Is the leather really from military boots?
It was made for U.S. military combat boots. It was held out of boot production for minor marks and saved from the waste stream. It was never issued or worn.
-
Do the marks on the hose mean it's damaged?
Letters, scuffs, and color changes are normal on reclaimed hose. They're part of its history. Some pieces have few or none. Limited-edition pieces are cut from hose with specific marks.
-
Is there a discount for first responders or military?
Yes. A verified GovX ID gets you 30% off, always.
-
What if it doesn't fit how they carry?
We stand behind everything we make. Every piece has a one-year repair guarantee for damage from normal use. For returns, reach out within 7 days of delivery.
